A Gentleman Farm
Poplar Hall is the home, farm and residence of Greg and Dawn Shelton. It's also one of the oldest standing historic homes in the state of Delaware. The Sheltons are only the fourth family to own and live at Poplar Hall. Built in the late 18th century by James Boulden, it was placed on the National Registry of Historical Places in 1988 and restored by Greg and his Father John Walter Shelton in 2005.
House
The Home
Poplar Hall was designed in the Georgian Architectural style. It is often characterized by its proportion, balance and symmetry. Brick styles of the original house were laid in "Flemish bond" in the front and "English bond" in the back. The stone service wing was added in 1800 and was a kitchen for the family.
Gardens
Kitchen Garden
The Kitchen Garden (or Potager) was designed by Greg Shelton and built in 2009. It was created in the colonial revival style and meant to provide hand planted, organic vegetables for the family. The English boxwood hedge that surrounds the garden acts as a wall to keep deer and wind away from plantings.
Outbuildings
Granary Barn
This outbuilding is one of five standing barns on the property. It's known as a "Corn Crib or Granary" and was built in the 1840's. It is said to be the oldest standing granary barn in the aged state of Delaware. The two story building held grain in the upper story, while the lower story enabled a horse and wagon to drive through and deposit corn in the outer bins.
